English

Digital images play a fundamental role in many critical domains, including medicine, astronomy, and industry, making the preservation of their quality against factors such as noise of paramount importance. This paper presents a novel combination of spatial processing and fuzzy logic within a unified framework. Here, pixels are converted into fuzzy numbers, and intensity variation is exploited. Accordingly, within the processing window, four ordered sequences (horizontal, vertical, and two diagonal) of pixel values are generated. The corrupted pixels are then reconstructed using the neighboring pixels available in the processing window. In this process, the closest possible value to the true pixel value is extracted based on the ordered sequences. To evaluate the reconstruction quality of the proposed filter in noisy images, the behavior of two metrics, PSNR and SSIM, was examined. Numerical and visual experiments demonstrate that the proposed filter is more efficient in preserving image quality under high-noise conditions. Since this algorithm operates on the basis of local window-based processing with a fixed size (3×3), and for each pixel, sorting and selection operations are performed in four directions, its computational complexity for an image with N pixels is of the order O(N). The results indicate that this algorithm, compared with more complex methods such as BCFM and TSVD, is more efficient and cost-effective in terms of execution time and memory consumption. Compared with the baseline method (Charmouti), it incurs a higher computational cost (approximately 8 to 10 times the execution time and 2 to 4 times the memory); however, this cost is negligible in absolute terms (less than one second and a few megabytes), and in return, it provides a noticeable improvement in reconstruction accuracy (PSNR and SSIM), while also preserving edges and image details effectively.
